What is the primary purpose of a SITREP?

The primary purpose of a Situation Report (SITREP) is to notify commanders of incidents. SITREPs provide critical information regarding ongoing operations, developments, or emergencies that require the attention of higher command. This allows for timely decision-making and resource allocation based on the current operational situation.

While debriefings and evaluations may occur after an operation, they are not the primary function of a SITREP. Similarly, although reporting unit position could be part of the overall information shared in a SITREP, the main emphasis is on informing commanders about incidents that may impact mission success or require immediate action.
